The Indian Dance Demonstration Evening titled “Expression of Emotion: Angikabhinayam in
Indian Dance Traditions” was successfully held on 09 March 2026 at the Auditorium of the Swami
Vivekananda Cultural Center from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. The event was jointly organized by the
Centre for Contemporary Indian Studies (CCIS) of the University of Colombo and the Swami
Vivekananda Cultural Center.
The session was conducted by Dr. Amali Nisansala Perera, who delivered an insightful and
engaging demonstration on Angikabhinayam the expressive use of body movements and gestures
in Indian classical dance traditions. Through a combination of performance and explanation, she
illustrated how physical expression plays a central role in conveying emotion, storytelling, and
aesthetic depth in classical dance forms.
The programme attracted a diverse audience, including students, academics, and enthusiasts of
performing arts. Participants were provided with both theoretical knowledge and practical
exposure, allowing them to better appreciate the intricacies of Indian dance and its expressive
techniques.
The event served as a valuable cultural and academic platform, strengthening artistic and
