The Centre for Contemporary Indian Studies (CCIS), University of Colombo, in collaboration with the Department of International Business, Faculty of Management and Finance, and the High Commission of India, successfully organized a guest lecture titled “The Next 10 Trillion $ Economy: A Snapshot of the Indian Economy & Industry” at the West Wing Conference Hall of the Faculty of Management and Finance.

The programme commenced with a courtesy meeting between the guest speaker, Ms. Devika Lal, Counsellor (Economic & Commerce), High Commission of India, and the Head of the Department of International Business, Ms. Sashya Herath. The session officially began with the welcome address delivered by Professor R. Senathiraja, Director of the Centre for Contemporary Indian Studies, who warmly welcomed the distinguished guest and participants. The event was also attended by Mr. Venuka Batagoda, representing the Department of International Business and Ms. Junita from the High Commission of India.

The lecture was delivered by Ms. Devika Lal, who provided a comprehensive analysis of India’s economic transformation and its ambitious vision of becoming a US$10 trillion economy. The presentation displayed India’s development from the post-independence era to its emergence as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, highlighting key milestones in economic reforms, industrialization, international trade, digital transformation, infrastructure development, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, and investment-led growth.

The session also examined India’s expanding global trade partnerships, free trade agreements, startup ecosystem, and strategic initiatives that are shaping its future economic trajectory. Through comparative perspectives and practical examples, participants gained valuable insights into India’s development model and its implications for international business, regional cooperation, and sustainable economic growth.

The event attracted approximately 150 undergraduate students from the Department of International Business, who actively participated in the interactive discussion and question-and-answer session. Their engagement contributed in deepening their understanding of contemporary economic trends and India’s evolving role in the global economy.
